eloisa to abelard

how happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
the world forgetting, by the world forgot.
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd;
labour and rest, that equal periods keep;
"obedient slumbers that can wake and weep;"
desires compos'd, affections ever ev'n,
tears that delight, and sighs that waft to Heav'n.

a wonderful passage ...

"I met Muriel at the Biltmore at seven. Two drinks, two drugstore tuna-fish sandwiches, then a movie she wanted to see, something with Greer Garson in it. I looked at her several times in the dark when Greer Garson's son's plane was missing in action. Her mouth was open. Absorbed, worried. The identification with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer tragedy complete. I felt awe and happiness. How I love and need her undiscriminating heart. She looked over at me when the children in the picture brought in the kitten and wanted me to love it. Even in the dark, I could sense that she felt the usual estrangement from me when I don't automatically love what she loves. Later, when we were having a drink at the station, she asked me if I didn't think that kitten was 'rather nice.' She doesn't use the word 'cute' any more. When did I ever frighten her out of her normal vocabulary? Bore that I am, I mentioned R.H.Blyth's definition of sentimentality: that we are being sentimental when we give to a thing more tenderness than God gives to it. I said (sententiously?) that God undoubtably loves kittens, but not, in all probability, with Technicolor bootees on their paws."

wikipedia on the pumpkins ...

you've heard me rant about wikipedia before ... it's a wonderfully detailed, 'open source', free online encyclopedia ...

... their section on the smashing pumpkins is great so far ... i was so excited, i had to stop reading to pass on the word, yo ... smashing pumpkins potpourri could easily be included in my seven dream categories, and the section seems very thorough and accurate ...

yeah, so go wikipedia .! ... and hurray for music .! ... and rah rah for snow .! ... and yay for knowing when to st..!

eleanor rigby ...

i just finished reading Douglas Coupland's Eleanor Rigby ... it was wonderful and, in my opinion, his best novel since Girlfriend in a Coma ...

People, you're now in the wilderness. You have a choice before you, and you have a winter of cold and starvation during which to make that choice ... You have to decide whether you want god to be here with you as a part of your everyday life, or whether you want god to be distant from you, not returning until you've created a world perfect enough for him to re-enter ...

i'll believe in anything

give me your eyes
i need sunshine
give me your eyes
i need sunshine
your blood, your bones, your voice, and your ghost

we've both been
very brave
walk around
with both legs
fight the
scary day
we both pulled the tricks out of our sleeves

but i'll believe in anything and
you'll believe in anything

if I could get the fire out from the wire
i'd share a life and you'd share a life
... if I could take the fire out from the wire
i'd take you where nobody knows you
and nobody gives a damn

and I could take another hit for you
and I could take away the trips from you
and I could take away the salt from your eyes
take away the skin and salt in you
and I could give you my apologies
by handing over my neologies
and I could take away your shaky knees
and I could give you all the olive trees
and look at the trees and look at my face and look at a place far away from here

so give me your eyes
i need sunshine !
give me your eyes
i need sunshine !
your blood, your bones, your voice, and your ghost

suggestions?

what novel would you suggest i read next?
and/or
what's your favourite book?

i've listed a few books in my profile here, but i'd say Franny & Zooey is my favourite ... for many reasons: it kept me intrigued throughout, it had a lasting impact on me, and reading Salinger was like discovering a new means of communication ... or, rather, like realizing that someone could write as i think ...
