i, rome
if you're interesting in learning ancient roman history in a fun way, check out the HBO series Rome (torrent), and Robert Grave's famous novel I, Claudius. together, they give a great overview of the roman empire from Julius Caesar to Nero
i had thought both would be 'heavy', but they are really just so wonderfully entertaining

I too have immensely enjoyed the HBO series Rome. Too bad it was cut short (ie. Only two seasons). I think the executives at HBO felt it was too expensive to continue. At least they wrapped up the story arcs at the end of the second season.
One thing that I am really enjoying is a weekly podcast on the history of Rome. You can find the homepage for it here: http://thehistoryofrome.blogspot.com/
Was a great show, gave me my weekly fix of violence. Add Dexter into that and I was one happy cookie. If you like historical television programs try ‘John Adams’, not as much violence but it really puts history into a different light, one that is much more approachable than a textbook.
great tips guys, i'll check 'em out
i've also extended my obsession, and i really like how the BBC filled in the gaps of my knowledge of ancient Rome with their series
